Covenant Love

Promise, photo by Ken Sutton, from Flickr, Creative Commons

This National Poetry Month I will be posting a sequence of poems, written last year and this year, for others in a series called Giving Poetry. In this series, people request a poem using a title, specific words, concepts, or ideas. After writing the poem, I send it to them, posting it on Facebook and on my blog. This is Giving Poetry.

Covenant love: spire, reflection, wave, red, beard, moss

Covenant Love: for Barry

Covenant love,
as old as the beard of father time,
binding as moss to the oak tree,
sealed in red blood,
shed for you and for me,
lifted up in spire,
a wave of grace, promise, and love,
which will never tire,
in the reflection up above.

Confidante: twinkle eyes bare feet broom

Confidante: for Kimberly

We danced
in bare feet,
sweeping
as a broom
at twilight.
The twinkle
of our love filled eyes
lit up the room.

Concept: oceans

I love the ocean. It is never ending, reminding me of God’s love for us.

Oceans: for Fay Love

The vastness of the oceans
spread wide as arms
open in longing for embrace.
The peaceful shoreline welcoming,
the silent breeze whispering His love,
the depths swallow—all forgiving.
As far as the east is from the west,
as wide as the current’s tide,
as deep as the oceans,
God’s love and forgiveness abides.

“Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!” –Micah 7:19, NLT

“As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” –Psalm 103:12, NIV

Agape Love

Concept: Agape Love

Agape Love: for Crysty

The true friend, the sister, the brother,
looks beyond the self and to the other.
The Christian’s love doth commune!
It spills out into service and makes room—
space and time, for people, the body, His bride—
God’s church—under His cross—under His steeple.
Agape love is broken as bread and intertwines.
It pours out in communion wine—in joy—as we dine.
Agape love is a feast of fellowship divine.
His life and love poured out for yours and for mine.

Graceful Moon

Graceful Moon

The silent white tuft of moon
Hangs in quietness in blue
Observing my love of you

“Grace, I love the moon,
And I love you,
But I love you more than the moon.”

Apart at the Seams

Falling Apart at the Seams, photo by Jocey K, from Flickr

Apart at the Seams

Pulling apart
At the seams
Pulling covers
Fight to sleep
Fight the dream
Fight self
Loss of steam

Pull it together
Stitched up tight
Wrapped in
Love tonight
Lay like feather
Hold dream
Together

Adore

Adore

Our love burns like fire
Beyond our desire
Beyond definition
Beyond encyclopedia description
Our love soars—
Flies high above expectation
Like a mother bird adores

Love Thunder

Love Thunder

Our love is happy
To combat the gloom
Love thunder—
Making room
You let down your hair
Electric is our love
As love fills the air

The Bell Tolls Desire

Tintinnabulation, photo by K. M. Gong, from Creative Commons

The Bell Tolls Desire

Tintinnabulation
When toes touch body
In undulation
The windows fog
Your mouth soft on mine
Ratcheting desire in time

The bell tolls desire
Our love will never tire

Desire

Desire Burns Within, photo by smkybear from flickr

Desire

Hunger and thirst
Until what is inside
Comes out in a burst
A yearning tide
Until outpourings
Release and reside

Pour

Soaked in
Love
Filled within
Then poured
Out again

“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” –Titus 3:4-7

Mountain Laurel

Mountain Laurel, photo by Jason Hollinger, pellaea, from Flickr

Tomorrow, May 29th, my wife Irene and I will celebrate nine years of marriage. One afternoon, about ten years ago, we hiked to this beautiful mountain cove with a stunning view of a waterfall. Irene painted and I wrote several poems. This is one of those poems about our love that the Mountain Laurel witnessed that day, before we knew.

Mountain Laurel

The Mountain Laurel sees little in their mountain cove
In their little huddle they call a grove
Hugging tightly the weathered steeps
Rooting down to watery deeps

Love roots down like the love the Laurel observed
On that fresh and new spring day,
As love hugged tightly the weathered steeps,
Reaching deeply to love’s refreshing waters deep.

The Mountain Laurel saw love that spring day
     in their mountain cove,
From their little huddle they call a grove,
They hugged tightly to love’s steeps and to how love shows,
Rooting down to love’s deeps,
and now the Mountain Laurel knows.

Love Carries

Ocean, photo by Stephen Edgar, from Flickr

Love Carries

Love carries like an ocean’s tide
Carries along two lovers
By the shoreline
The cold wind against them
Under overcast skies
As they bask in the sunlight
Of love filled eyes

Summer’s Air

Spier Willow Trees, by Ula Gillion from Flickr here

Summer’s Air

Her skin was radiant
As the noon sun
Illuminated softly
Through the shade
Of the willow tree
The smell of fried chicken
Arose from the picnic basket
We reclined on the plaid blanket
Questioning silently if this was love
If the summer’s air would hold redemption
The smell of watermelon wafted in the breeze
As the willow cradled and sheltered us in its leaves
Before it occurred to me there was no melon
Her glossy rosy-red lips touched mine in fruitful passion
Watermelon never tasted so good in summer’s air
